Path: Assets > Configure Asset Management > Media Types > Edit
The Add/Edit Media page allows you to define a multimedia file type for use with digital assets, or to change information and settings for an existing media type.
Media Type
Displays the media type’s code. This field displays only when you are editing an existing media type.
Code
Specifies a unique code for the media type (up to 30 characters). This code is used to identify the media type on the Media Types page and on any other pages that display the media type code. This field is required.
Codes are displayed in all upper case letters. If you enter lower case alphanumeric characters for the code, the software automatically converts them to upper case when the code is displayed. The Code cannot include spaces. If you enter a space, Portfolio will display an error message when you save the settings.
Note: This value must be unique. If you enter a code that is already being used elsewhere on the system and try to save the media type, the software displays an error message indicating that the value must be unique, and informing you that the value you entered is already being used for another media type.
Name
Specifies the system name of the media type (up to 80 characters) for the specified language. This name is used to identify the media type on the Media Types page and on any other pages in the Admin console that display the media type name. This field is required.
For this field, you can also specify an alternate name for a specific language. Choose the language from the drop-down list of supported languages, then enter the localized name in the field.
Note: If your web browser is configured to use a display language that is not supported by Portfolio and you have chosen to display the Admin console in a language other than the default language (en_US), the language that displays in the drop-down list of supported languages defaults to US English.
If a localized name already exists for a specific language, the software displays that language name differently in the drop-down list. When you enter a localized name for a specific language, the language name appears with a "++" suffix. If you clear the localized name for a specific language, the software displays the language name without the different formatting.
Icon URL
Specifies the name (up to 255 characters) of the Uniform Resource Locater (URL) for the icon that is used to represent the media type. This field is required.
When you create a media type, you may upload an icon file to the /custom/web directory on the Portfolio server. After you upload the file, the relative path to the uploaded file on the Portfolio server displays in the Uploaded File URL field. You can then copy and paste the icon file’s URL into the Icon URL field.
Extension
Specifies the file extension(s) to be associated with the media type. Up to 30 characters may be specified in this field.
To specify a file extension, type the file extension characters into this field, and choose Add. The file extension you specified is placed in the Extensions field.
Extensions
Lists and manages the file extensions associated with the media type. This field is required.
Add file extensions to this field by typing a file extension in the Extension field, and choose Add. To remove a file extension from the list, select the extension in the Extensions field, and choose Remove.
Action
Specifies what Portfolio will do when the user retrieves the digital asset with the defined media type. Select one of the following options.
|
Option |
Description |
|
View |
Displays the digital asset in the Internet browser. This action is usually used for image media types. |
|
Download |
Downloads the digital asset to a location on the user’s computer. This action is usually used for document media types, such as Microsoft Word documents and Microsoft Excel spreadsheets. |
|
Stream |
Plays the file through a media player, such as Adobe Flash Player or Microsoft Silverlight. This action is usually used with video and audio media types. Important: The patron’s computer and web browser influence the streaming of audio and video files. SirsiDynix has tested the streaming for each of the audio/video media types included with Portfolio; however, other video and audio formats may not work with Portfolio’s supported web browsers. Before adding a media type for streaming, test how well the audio or video type streams in different browsers. |
|
Stream/Download |
Plays the file through a media player and includes a link for downloading the video or audio file. |
Internet Media Type
Specifies the two-part Internet file format identifier (up to 255 characters) for the media type. This field is required.
The Internet file format identifier uses the following format:
type/subtype
For example, if the media type is an MP3 audio file, type the following identifier in the Internet Media Type field:
audio/mpeg
If the media type is a GIF file, type the following identifier in the Internet Media Type field:
image/gif
For more information about Internet media types and the Internet file format identifier, see the “MIME Media Types” page at the Web site maintained by the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA). The page URL is as follows:

File Uploading
You can upload existing files to define media types. After you upload a file to the /custom/web directory on the Portfolio server, the relative path to that file on the Portfolio server displays in the Uploaded File URL field. You can then copy and paste that path into the entry fields on this page. Using this method, you can quickly upload and use existing files for media types.
Choose File
Lets you browse for a file to upload to the Portfolio server. Type the file name in the entry field, or click Choose File to display the file browsing window. After you select a file to upload, Portfolio displays the path to that file in the entry field.
Upload
Copies the specified file to the /custom/web/ directory on the Portfolio server. Any files that you upload will remain on the server until they are deleted from the /custom/web/ directory. After you upload the file, the relative path to the uploaded file on the Portfolio server displays in the Uploaded File URL field.
Note: If you try to upload a file that has the same name as a file that already exists on the Portfolio server, the uploaded file is renamed when it is placed on the server to avoid overwriting the existing file. The renamed file will have a number added to the beginning of the original file name. For example, if you upload the logo.png file, and a file by that name already exists in the /custom/web/ directory on the server, the file you are uploading will be renamed to 1logo.png when it is placed on the server. The relative path name to the renamed file will be /custom/web/1logo.png.
Important: If you upload an HTML file that contains images, JavaScript, or CSS, you must separately upload those elements into the /custom/web/ directory.
Uploaded File URL
Displays the relative path as a link to the uploaded file on the Portfolio server. You can then do either of the following:
| • | Copy and paste the path into the entry fields on this page. |
| • | Click the path to display the contents of the file in a separate window. |
Note: Each time you upload a file, its relative path replaces the relative path of the previously-uploaded file in this field. To see a list of all files that have been uploaded and have not been deleted from the server, click the path displayed in the See All Uploaded Files field.
See All Uploaded Files
Displays the /custom/web/ directory path in which the uploaded files are placed on the Portfolio server. Click the path to display a list of the files in the /custom/web/ directory on the Directory Listings page.
Note: Only a user with admin privileges can access the Directory Listings page.
